Honors English III is a two-semester course designed to build skills, knowledge, and competence through the core American literature components of novels, short stories, plays, essays, poetry, and articles. It will prepare students to advance to other levels in both high school and college. This course will continue to help students build expertise in the use of grammar, vocabulary development, reading and writing skills, and the ability to analyze and think critically. Also, this course will further prepare students for the reading and writing sections of the SAT and ACT. In addition to course textbooks, many materials will be available through this class website.

Students begin by reviewing grammatical components such as the parts of speech and sentence structure, and then incorporate other rules of grammar. This course will require students to read works in American literature, write various essays, complete semester projects, and complete various other assignments. Students will gain an understanding of the development of American Literature in context with American history and will exercise their English language skills with close literary analysis of many genres and historical periods of our country. There are several “Writing from Models” writing units that parallel the American Literature units during the course. The models provide exemplars for writing assignments which include reports and analysis, argument and persuasion, critical essay, informal essay, narration, and narration and characterization.
